The guiding principles of the Slacker@Work

I’ve been thinking lately about what overarching ideas guide folks like us (you know, smart people who want to do good work, but only when it’s good work we want to do). I’ve examined my own ways and I think I’ve isolated 15 16 (how convenient!) principles that I tend to follow. I’ll list them […]

How to write a holiday card to your staff

My interactions with physical pens usually consist of a few seconds of scrawling my signature on some letter. I rarely write much text longhand these days. Except this time of year, and other special occasions, when I write personalized notes to folks. My ink-stained fingers are evidence of the labor of the last four hours. […]

The present connundrum

I have a really hard time buying presents for other people. This makes it tough at work, when I’ve got to buy either 10 gifts that are similar in value, but personalized to each person (signaling how much I like them, care about them and think deeply about them) OR 10 gifts that are identical, […]

Google timesaver

I’m probably behind the curve here, but I just learned a cool trick using the Google search bar in Firefox 2.0. You can put in simple (and some not-so-simple) equations and get the answer as a “suggestion” without ever having to navigate to the full-on Google search. Super cool! I use Google as a quick […]

Firefox-based browser for infovores

I haven’t spent much time with this yet, so don’t have a full review, but wanted to at least point this out for folks who might benefit.
There’s a new Firefox-based browser called Zotero that is aimed at scholars, but would be of use to pretty much anyone who is a rabid consumer/collector of information. The […]

Bring killed tabs back from the dead (Firefox 2.0)

Like everyone else, I grabbed the 2.0 release of Firefox yesterday. I won’t regurgitate all the neat stuff about it, but I will point out this one very useful feature: if you accidentally close a tab you can bring it back from the netherworld by hitting Shift+Cmd+T (on a Mac) or Shift+Ctrl+T (on Windows).
This is […]

del.icio.us for search

I know a while back I said that Diigo might replace del.icio.us for me. It hasn’t yet. del.icio.us remains too simple not to use, and my experience using Diigo as a passthrough to del.icio.us left something to be desired (such as the ability to consistently remember my del.icio.us login). I’m use Diigo occasionally, but it […]

Free GTD seminar with David Allen

Well, it’s really a “webinar” (hate that term) and it’s specifically about using MindManager within the GTD context. But it’s definitely free. Takes place on your computer on Tuesday, October 10, 2006. Details here. Cosponsored by MindJet, so they’ll be using MindManager on this presentation. Even if you don’t use MindManager, I’m guessing the concepts […]

Gettin’ dressed for cheap

I vastly prefer paying a little extra for my “work clothes” in order to get stuff that lasts, rather than buying cheap stuff frequently. That doesn’t mean I don’t like a good deal, though. Bills Khakis are the kind of pants that I like to wear. Well made and long lasting, but they’ve got a […]

Diigo may replace del.icio.us for me

I’ve been a huge fan of del.icio.us and I’ve tried and rejected many of the potential replacements for the service. Recently I read about Diigo and I figured I’d give it a try. Turns out I love it very much. :-)
I use del.icio.us in three primary ways. Straight up personal bookmarks, as a service to […]

Book review: Management by Baseball

I mentioned a while back that I was reading this book and expected to review it soon. Well life intervened and it got lost in a pile until this past weekend. I’ve gotten back to the book and finally finished it off.
What an interesting book! First, you’ve got to know that I’m not a […]

Best wallet ever

I’m not much of a back pocket wallet guy. Used to be, but then I got a Levenger money clip wallet thing a few years ago and fully made the switch to any-pocket-but-the-back-pocket wallet carrying. The Levenger money clip didn’t last nearly long enough, and then they quit selling it. I bounced around a few […]

Niche market research the cheap, fast and easy way

If you ever have to learn about an online market, there’s a fast and easy way to do it that doesn’t require fancy market research firms or lots of money. Usually the old saying goes: “Fast, easy, cheap: Pick two.” In this case however, you can can have your cake and eat it too. There’s […]

Great email utility: YouSendIt.com

This is just a quick plug for my favorite utility for sending large files via email: YouSendIt.com. I’ve got multiple options for posting large (>10mb) files on webservers, but when I do that I usually forget to take the file down and it clutters things up. Gmail is great for sending files that are under […]

Skype tricks (with Quicksilver)

I heard about Skype going with the free SkypeOut strategy in the US/Canda and wanted to try it out. Had no luck for a long time, but finally figured out that you’ve got to put a plus sign (+) in front of your numbers like so: +15035551212. Works like a charm. It blows me away […]
