Slacker Manager

Why Management?

by Phil Gerbyshak on March 3rd, 2008

Please take a few moments to answer the question or questions that fits your situation:

If you’re a manager, why did you select management?

If you’re not manager, why have you not managed before?

If you’re a management consultant, why do you do what you do?

If you’re just reading Slacker Manager, why do you read our blog?

If there was one question you could have answered about management, why is it important that you answer it?

I’ll be compiling all the answers and sharing them in an article at the end of the week, and I’ll include my answers as well.

If you’re a manager, why did you select management? It selected me, but i’ve found the challenge of trying to figure out how people best perform and how to put them in a position so that they can, has been the most rewarding, intellectually and personally.

Didn’t really chose this either. I actually started out more technical programming and discovered a knack and interest for working with people to produce software. I followed the path because I found that it was more interesting to figure out a vision, get a team to work together effectively and help team members grow.

If there was one question you could have answered about management, why is it important that you answer it?

The question: Is your manager an individual contributor who also manages or a manager of a team?

The reason to answer it: the type of manager directly effects the amount of work, support, and information an individual contributor has to provide in order to manage their career.

If you’re a manager, why did you select management?

Management happens. In my case, everyone else abdicated the low level management (ok, some call it junior management) and overnight, I was leading a team while the titled manager was creating his career with his own boss. I only had one choice and that was to dive in. I looked for help from others in my situation, joined user groups where we could “self help” with our peers and went back to grad school for business. Looking back, I am glad I took the opportunity.

I’m in management consulting. I generally work hands’ on with a team or individuals, often as interim line management during a transition. I guess that makes me a manager, too.

I do what I do because sometimes people could use a little help, and I’ve collected a pile of experience and some tools along the way that sometimes can be helpful. Personally, helping people do better than they might otherwise is a kick. I also bore easily, so learning new businesses and companies fits for me as part of the job.

Managing and consulting aren’t that different, really. They are both about succeeding through others’ success.

If you’re a manager, why did you select management?

I selected management for a number of reasons but primarily because I realized that I REALLY enjoyed training other people in the workplace and to help them improve along with me. From that I was able to transition myself into leadership and management positions while improving the performance of a larger team and providing help to each member along the way. I’m passionate about providing that help to others and that is why I still love management now as well.

If you’re a manager, why did you select management?

    I didn’t. It’s not that I coveted this role.
But there was something in my personality that drove me to it. I’d probably defer to Donald O. Clifton & Marcus Buckingham in that I fit the bill according to my strength themes — Command, Achiever, Relator, Individualization & Arranger.

I like what I do. I am good at it and people seem to think I’m a good manager — so that’s that.

Of course, maybe it’s just because i’m a bossy control freak…kb

I started out in Management 25 years ago!

    Why?

The Managers around me seem to earn a lot more money than me! They had the lifestyle I wanted - holidays, cars…that sort of stuff.

I had a poor upbringing, so I thought that’s it Management is the way to go and earn lots of money. Simple as that.

And I have never looked back - I have enjoyed my Management career immensely. Managing 1000’s of staff, managing multi-million dollar projects, managing mergers, acquisitions and company sales.

I’ve been lucky, I’ve worked for many large corporate companies and this has enabled me to move around and change management role every 18 months or so.

If you are thinking about a management career, I can highly recommend it.

    Andrew
