The 10 Questions Not to Ask as a Manager

by David Zinger on February 21st, 2008

Here are some key questions NOT to ask yourself as a manager:

 question why

Why am I doing this?

How come when I look at all the hours I put in I make less per hour than the people I manage?

How did my boss ever get to be the boss?

How did this person end up in my department?

Why does everyone insist on telling me everything about everyone else?

Why did I get a degree in business when my work is more like a combination of an overworked air traffic controller combined with a psychiatrist?

Doesn’t my family know I am just doing all this for them?

How many more sleeps until Saturday?

How much more work can I possible do?

What’s my name again?

How many more sleeps until Saturday? Well, that all depends on whether or not you take a lunch…

I, personally, enjoy not asking myself why I am working on a given item. It’s much more rewarding to realize two days after the fact that I’ve gotten completely off task and still haven’t gotten done with the original item. I recommend this approach to anyone!

    Sabrina,
Who needs lunch or any time away from work time? I charge off in 4 directions, get diverted in 2 more and then my child phones and says, “I thought you were going to pick me up half an hour ago.”
For me…2 more sleeps until Saturday.

I like your use of the principle of contrast.

To compliment your list, I created a parallel list of 10 Key Questions to Ask as a Manager:
    - how can I make the most of this … or what can I learn … or what can I improve?
    - do I have a good deal — am I getting what I need?
    - what do I respect in my boss that I can learn?
    - what’s the unique value X brings to the table?
    - what am I doing well that encourages others to seek me for counsel?
    - how can I apply what I know?
    - am I carving out the right family time and balancing work/life effectively?
    - what’s my favorite part of today … what did I learn …. ?
    - what value can I deliver or what can I let go?
    - what’s the secret of life?

    JD,
I am a Libra, not that I follow astrology, but I still like the balance.
