Management Quotes: Think About It

by Phil Gerbyshak on November 10th, 2007

I love quotes. I collect quotes. And I’m on the lookout for great management quotes that I can use in presentations and to help me make points in my writing. From time to time, I’ll be sharing some interesting management quotes, for you to think about and see if they resonate with you.

“Management is nothing more than motivating other people.” - Lee Iacocca

“Good management consists in showing average people how to do the work of superior people.” - John D. Rockefeller

“The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work.” - Agha Hasan Abedi

“Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them.” - Paul Hawken

Please share your own favorite quotes in the comments on this post, or in future management quotes posts.

[Phil Gerbyshak enjoys great management quotes and uses them as points to ponder and inspiration.]

One of my favorite management quotes is from Warren Buffett:
“When a management team with a reputation for brilliance joins a business with poor fundamental economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.”

    My favorites:

“High sentiments always win in the end, The leaders who offer blood, toil, tears and sweat always get more out of their followers than those who offer safety and a good time. When it comes to the pinch, human beings are heroic.” - George Orwel

“The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already.” - John Buchan

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be. - Rosalynn Carter

Scot’s quote on management is this one: Your short term decisions become your long term strategy so choose your decisions carefully.

One of the best is “Hanlon’s Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.” This explains much of what I have seen in the workplace over the years.

Everything in management comes back to personalities and their influence for the better or worse on relationships.
