Slacker Manager

Are you a Good Boss or a Bad Boss?

by Phil Gerbyshak on November 16th, 2007

Trevor Gay is a management expert, having spent 35 years in the health care field, with many as a manager, and now shares his wisdom at Simplicity is the Key. Trevor shared on article all about the difference between good bosses and bad bosses that really resonated with me. He listed some of the qualities of his best bosses (they inspired confidence, were humble, had integrity, and were always there when I needed help) and his worst bosses (who never seemed to be around when I needed them, always asked me to justify what I wanted to do, always wanted to know what I was doing, and who didn’t smile much).

Trevor challenged his readers to think about what are some of the other difference between good and bad bosses, so that’s what I’ll do here.

Evil Bosses

Good bosses

  • Help employees set reasonable goals
  • Partner to find the best possible outcome for all parties
  • Find new ways to deliver old messages
  • Are honest and up front, but not mean

Bad bosses

  • Sugar coat everything
  • Complain that “that’s just the way we’ve always done it, so that’s the way we’ll always do it”
  • Never set goals, because goals mean accountability
  • Take the credit when things go right, and point the finger when things go wrong

What do you think? What have your best bosses, and your worst bosses done to help you become a better manager. After all, everyone’s an example, for what to do or what NOT to do.

Which way do you lean…good…or E-V-I-L?

Ahhhh… bad bosses. There’s a golden lining here when it comes to bad bosses. The bad ones usually provide the best guide for “what not to do”. When in doubt (in hopes of being a good boss), “just do the opposite of what the bad boss would have done.

It’s much easier to get a good boss once you have experienced bad boss syndrome for a while.

This is a really poorly written article. Check out the grammar errors in the 1st paragraph (in quotes).

Andre - Great point. When you have a bad boss for a while, you can be a better manager, and a better associate. Great link too. Thanks for sharing it.

Ryann - thanks so much for catching the grammatical error. I’ve cleaned it up now. I think my brain knew what I meant, but obviously my typing fingers did not. Should be better now.
