Slacker Manager

What’s Phil Reading?

by Phil Gerbyshak on October 2nd, 2007

Thought it might be nice to share with you a few of the books I’m thinking of reading, to give you a preview of some of the reviews I’ll be sharing soon at Slacker Manager, and to ask you which one(s) seem to resonate most with you.

The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly - I love the premise of this fable. If you don’t know the dreams of your people, you can’t reach them in the deepest fiber of their being, and thus you risk disengaging them when you need them to be most disengaged. Endorsed by Pat Lencioni (quite a fable writer in his own rite), this one looks like a great read! Speaking of Lencioni…

The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers and Their Employees by Pat Lencioni - Another fable from Lencioni, which seems like quite an amazing fable. Pat’s 3 signs are anonymity, irrelevance and immeasurement, and this looks to be a great read/listen. I’ll probably listen to this one via Audible.com on my iPod. For more about these signs, and for some additional management insights from Pat, check out this great interview between Pat Lencioni and the Cranky Middle Manager Wayne Turmel. Pat mentions The Dream Manager as one of his favorite reads.

The Ring in the Rubble by Dr. Gary Bradt - All about one of the most important elements in a leader’s day, the constant of change, this book looks to be a big winner. In fact, our first winner of the Order of the Golden Slacker interviewed Dr. Bradt. Check out the great interview between Lisa Haneberg and Dr. Gary Bradt.

So which one, or ones, look interesting to you? Interested in reading along with me? I’m starting with The Dream Manager, and then am undecided on which book to read next. Have something else I should be reading? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Time to add to your collection Phil, let me recommend…

A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink

The book explains why right-brainers (creative side of brain) will rule the world. It’s very convincing!

Here’s what Seth Godin says…Wow, A Whole New Mind
is one of those rare books, that marks a turning point.

After reading this blog and your personal one, I’m confident you and the visitors here will enjoy the book.

Eduardo - Great suggestion! That one’s on the short list for next as well. Dan’s a great guy, an excellent author, and an amazing thinker. Thanks for the powerful endorsement!

    Hey Phil,
I’d recommend The 60 Second Leader: everything you need to know about leadership in 60 second bites, as it’s perfect for slacker managers. It was published by Capstone/John Wiley and Sons earlier this year. On the other hand, I wrote it, so I may be biased. You can get a taster of the book to see if it’s any good from the free ebook The Little Book of Leadership, which condenses some of the 60-second chapters down even further into 10-second reads (even better for slackers with no time). It’s on this link: http://www.PhilDourado.com
