So many toys (and a request)

by Bren on February 28th, 2007

This is a totally bifurcated post. Part one describes a few recent distractions. Part two is a call for help.

Part one:
I’ve been messing with new toys. Twitter, for one (this is me). You can post from IM, or TXT or via the web. Also, I’m kind of eyeballing Jaiku but haven’t set up an account. I’ve also been messing with Tumblr (this is me). It’s really cool. A very stripped down blog tool. Has a nice little bookmarklet for posting which makes it too easy not to do. Fun stuff.

Part two:
I’m going to San Diego for a conference. My wife is coming along this time. I used to live in San Diego, but it’s been a while. Where would you go if you were there for four days (we’re staying on Coronado)? I’m looking for quick visits, restaurants (cheap-to-middling), etc. I don’t want to just be relegated to the old college haunts, so lemme know what your favs are.

You’d like the Patagonia Surf Shop in Cardiff, about 1/2 miles south of Swami’s right off the PCH. Kind of a haul from Coronado but worth the trip. Encinitas is close by and has some good healthy grub.

Thanks, Michael. That’s funny–I spent a weekend in San Marcos with friends a few weeks ago and we surfed Cardiff. Dang reef cut my feet all up. :-)

Good tips on the eats in Encinitas. I don’t think my wife has ever been there…we might make the trip!

    Reasonable:
Miguel’s in Coronado (by the Del) is one of my favorite places to eat when I’m back in town (grew up there). The brew pub on the 200 block of Orange has decent food and good beer.

    Slightly Upscale:
Prado in Balboa Park is quite good and it’s a nice stroll in the evening. Another place worth eating that’s owned by the same company is Island Prime, they have lobster mac and cheese….

Check out the Midway if you can and the memorial there to the Tin Can Sailors (Last of the Tin Can Sailors is an amazingly inspirational WWII book if you are into that genre). Also pick up a copy of the Reader as soon as you get in town for a listing of what’s going on.. I find it a great way to find fun things to do when I’m back for just a few days.

    Have fun!

Mama Testa’s has, by far, the best tacos you will ever have. http://www.mamatestataqueria.com/

For breakfast, go to the Hash House in the Hillcrest area. They have outstanding breakfast and brunches.

For lunch or supper, Phil’s BBQ has some of the best BBQ you’ll find.

World Famous has excellent lobster tacos and a great view of the ocean. On a clear night, you can see the Green Flash when the sun sets.
