del.icio.us for search
I know a while back I said that Diigo might replace del.icio.us for me. It hasn’t yet. del.icio.us remains too simple not to use, and my experience using Diigo as a passthrough to del.icio.us left something to be desired (such as the ability to consistently remember my del.icio.us login). I’m use Diigo occasionally, but it hasn’t replaced del.icio.us for me yet.
I use del.icio.us more than ever, actually. Like a lot of other folks, I find myself going directly to del.icio.us rather than to a traditional search engine for specific searches. My bookmarks are always helpful, of course, but having access to everyone’s bookmarks is even more helpful. The other day, when I wanted to find some cool tshirts, I went straight to the del.icio.us tshirts tag (and tshirt tag). That gets me off to a good start. It’s interesting to notice that the 13th result on a Google search for ‘tshirts‘ is the tshirts tag on del.icio.us. Even Google likes del.icio.us!
I’m not saying that the Google results aren’t any good–far from it. There a lot of duplicates between the two searches. What the del.icio.us search gives me that the Google search doesn’t is a page that’s free of ads, and I get to see just how popular (especially using the /popular/tshirts link) each link is among those who use del.icio.us.
Anyway, I’ve been noticing that I use del.icio.us as a search engine more and more, since the results are pretty much what I’m looking for, and using the ‘related tags’ function helps me find even more stuff that I might not have considered with a straight up Google search.

Brendon,
The new toolbar available from Diigo lab http://www.diigo.com/tools/lab solves the delicious log-in problem. Importing from delicious has also been improved recently. Thanks for trying it out.

Thanks, Maggie. Just installed it and it’s working like a charm. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll start pushing my bookmarks through Diigo again!
