Goals and burning your mind

by Bren on June 16th, 2006

Just a couple of quick links to some new apps that have been pointed out to me recently.

First is Joe’s Goals, which is a super simple web-based goal tracker that has all the ajaxy stuff you’ve come to expect. There’s not really any social aspect (read: external guilt) which we’ve also come to expect from new webby things, but I bet it’s in the works. Accounts are free. Though it’s utterly effortless, and even a little fun, to create new goals and track them, it’s probably not something I’ll use. Paper still works pretty good for me.

The other cool thing is called Mindburn, and it’s Mac-only standalone app. It’s basically flashcards on steroids, and I like it. The idea is that you add “notes” of things that you want to remember and then you build a new habit of checking Mindburn, just like you check email. When you add a note you have the option of setting up a schedule of how often you will review the note. Then, when you check Mindburn, the application displays the notes that are due for review and tracks it all. It is deceptively simple and very slick. It also is not free (though it’s fully functional for the first 30 notes). I’ve always been a fan of flashcard-based learning so this thing totally strikes a chord with me. If you’ve got stuff to burn into your mind, and you rock the Mac, Mindburn is definitely worth a look.
