Management by Baseball
I’ve been reading this neat little book called Management by Baseball by Jeff Angus. Jeff is a consultant and sportswriter up in Seattle and he’s written a pretty cool book. I’ll get a more formal review up when I finish, but so far the book has proved to be a nice primer for general management. What makes it unique are the well constructed parallels that Jeff has drawn between management in baseball and management in business. I’m not a baseball fan, and though Jeff goes to great lengths to make the book accessible to someone like me, I still find myself scratching my head over some terms that clearly must have immediate recognition in baseball circles, but leave me wondering what they mean. Also, what’s the deal with all the weird names in baseball? Guys have first names like Branch, Yogi, Pie and Catfish. Baseball must attract ‘em or something.
Anyway, I notice that the book is today’s giveaway over at InBubbleWrap. Definitely worth throwing your name in the hat.

Yeah, weird, huh? It just never captured my attention/imagination, I guess. It’s not that I don’t like baseball, I’m just agnostic about it. And I’d rather go surfing. :-)

On your last post you mention leaders being servants. There are two things that most managers do not understand. A leader serves and a leader is an advocate.
