Tabbed browsing ‘fu
Just a quick note to evangelize my newest favorite Firefox extension: Tab Mix Plus.
Recent updates to Firefox have rendered Tabbrowser Extensions utterly useless, and I’ve been grudgingly using Firefox’s built-in tab management stuff while I searched for a suitable replacement to the old extension. I’m a freak for tabbed browsing, and I prefer to bend my browser’s behavior to my will, rather than the other way around. Tab Mix Plus put enough control back in my hands that I’m satisfied again. Additionally, it adds some cool session management stuff so if you close your browser, you can immediately flip back to previously saved sessions.
I think I’ve installed Tab Mix Plus on a half a dozen computers in the last week. I was going to write up my personal setup, but instead I just used the very handy settings export/import feature. So here are my settings. You can just save that file to your harddrive (as a txt file), then use the ‘Settings’ button at the lower left corner of the Tab Mix Plus dialog box to import the settings. Choose ‘import settings’ and navigate to the file you saved. Easy.
Real quick, here’s my browser’s basic setup (which you’ll get with that settings file): close boxes on every tab; new tabs open from the address bar and the search bar, and they open in the background; middle-clicks open new tabs from links.

by far my favourite feature of Tab Mix Plus is the Undo Tab Close feature. I’ve set up my middle-click in the tab bar to restore the last closed tab. What’s even more spectacular is that it’ll restore the position of it and retain any half-filled forms (which saved me once or twice).

I know I’m late to the party, but I feel like I’d be remiss if I didn’t suggest Opera, which will do all this and more (mmm … mouse gestures). Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do find myself curious about why people use Firefox with a boatload of extensions instead of just installing Opera. It’s got a thousand little touches … nicer handling of bookmarks, RSS, downloaded files, a source viewer that lets you edit, etc. Did I mention mouse gestures? :)
