re Typepad: I know what you mean. Blogs and blog hosting is a frustrating process. I’ve changed hosts, um, more times than I should have. I’m not a Typepad customer, but I’m not sure you’ll be much rewarded by switching. Even the wonderful folks at textdrive (where I currently host — well, where I’m hosting forever since I signed up with their VCII deal) have occasional, frustrating downtime.

I guess I’m saying that while you might be frustrated, they all suck. They’re all going to suck until you pay a hell of a lot more than then $20 a month (or whatever you pay). And boy howdy, them five-nines of availability are pricey.

You will not be sorry for switching to wordpress.

Wordpress is great. But Jeff is right. Unless you want to pay more dollars i’m not so sure you’ll be totally happy JUST by switching platforms.

Yeah, I totally understand downtime and I’m comfortable with that. I’ve run various blogs using Movabletype, Wordpress, Blogger and Mambo, so I’ve got a pretty good conception of what to expect when doing my own tech vs. outsourcing it.

I signed up with Typepad because I had good experiences with Movabletype, felt that 6A really understood blogging, and I wanted the most advanced hosted blogging platform available at the time. Worked great for me for a long time, but it seems that now they suffer from the law of unintended consequences. I know they’ll get better–they have to. I’m just beginning to demand more from my platform.

This last outage, while undertandable, was just the last bit of impetus I needed to make the move I’d been considering for a long time. WP has a TON of plugins that’ll make Slacker Manager a more functional and fun blog. I’m looking forward to it…

Just to follow up: caveats aside, I agree with the switch. I left MT as a blogging platform after I couldn’t keep up with the comment spam. I tried WP (and found it to be pretty good), but found I liked Textpattern even more. I’m still a little stymied by the limitations of Textpattern, but I’m more comfortable hacking it than WP. Just a thought.

I do have a blog at wordpress.com, however, in addition. So I can hardly talk.

    Vindictapart.

Why does the blogosphere think Six Apart sucks so much? Why is the WordPress community so vocal, bordering on vindictive, when it comes to Six Apart? These are rhetorical questions that I find fascinating to look at.
