Slacker Manager

On motivation

by Bren on November 18th, 2005

Reader Will Critchlow passed along a couple of interesting links today. First is this article from the BBC about the link between health and job satisfaction. A quote:

People with low job satisfaction are most likely to
encounter emotional burnout, reduced self-esteem, anxiety and
depression, say researchers.

Will also passed along a link to a nice free e-book called The Laws of Motivation. It’s aimed at motivation in the workplace and I really liked it. Plus it has pretty pictures. Who can argue with good content and pretty pictures?

Gee…anxiety and depression because of lack of job satisfaction? That is a revelation.

Now, if you told me that it gave you warts, or bad acne…now, that would be something.

Luckily, I currently have a satisfying job. Surprise, surprise…not depressed or anxious.

OK, so I’m watching The Matrix right now. Is it the job that causes the cruddy side effects, or the other way around?

If you decide the job is worthwhile, do the other symptoms diminish?

    Slacker Manager: On motivation

With motivation at the forefront of this blog, I am always on the lookout for interesting links and information. By way of another, SlackerManager links to several pieces of motivational material. The article may state what appears to be obvious, but …

It’s not just job satisfaction that affects your health - it’s your position on the company hierarchy too. Research on British civil servants showed that risk of heart disease was related directly to position on the ladder. Read this excellent ‘manifesto’ on http://www.changethis.com - ‘Why your boss is programmed to be a dictator’. It talks about the health/hierarchy connection, and applies the systems thinking approach to the question of leadership.

    Hello!!!

I was reading your blog and wanted to thank you for sharing your ideas.
Your article reminded me of a good conference I attended for “Women In
Technology” (WITI) in Los Angeles, CA last year. At that conference I had
the awesome opportunity to meet Marcia Wieder.

She and I spoke about overcoming fears to achieve our dreams.
Although my time with her was brief, I learned from “America’s Dream Coach”
about the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone so I could achieve
my dreams. At that time I really did not know who this precious woman was
but later learned she had been on Oprah and PBS-TV.

Marcia’s brief touch on my life made a great impact on me. Recently I
discovered her blog at http://www.dreamcoachdirect.com/ and
a Maui Dream Retreat she is giving away!!! The Maui Dream
Retreat includes a week in Maui with Marcia, roundtrip airfare, and accomodations!!
I thought you might be interested in what she had to say as well.

May all of our dreams come true!!

    Gina
