Slacker Manager

Friday mailbag

by Bren on October 21st, 2005

It’s that time again, the Friday mailbag! Okay, I’ve never actually had a mailbag day before because nobody ever writes to me, but I’m not letting that stop me. The following letter may or may not have been completely fabricated by me, purely for my own enjoyment:

Dear SlackManager:

I read your post about the blackberry and I have a question for you. I have a friend who just got a blackberry. I told him about how he can turn off the vibrating mode for email, but he told me he likes it too much. He keeps the blackberry in his pants pocket all the time and won’t/can’t stop emailing himself. He cc’s himself on everything now. Ever since he got the blackberry, I hear frantic typing then a pause and then giggling and then typing again. This goes on all the live-long day. Do I Does my friend have a problem? How can I help him?

Thanks,

Buzzed

Thanks for the question, Buzzed. Yes, there is a problem here. Several, actually. First, it’s "Slacker Manager" not "SlackManager." Why can’t you people get that straight?

Next, yeah, your "friend" has a problem. Your "friend" has to find a way to break the buzzing habit. Most people can’t take the straight up cold turkey approach and just turn it off. No, you, excuse me, your "friend" may need to take a gradual approach and start by simply taking the ‘berry out of the pocket and putting it on the belt, or in a shirt pocket. After a few days move the ‘berry to a desktop. Pretty soon the sound of the buzzing ‘berry on the desk will be sufficient motivation to change the setting. Once the ‘berry has gone quiet, it’s a short trip to it’s new home in a briefcase or jacket pocket.

Good luck and be well.

Um Bren, are you sending yourself questions again? Shame shame :) I’m curious if this person has seen what happens to those pesky little calendar reminders that are just as fun, I mean, troubling. Seriously, this person needs help. Perhaps a local chapter of BA (Blackberries Anonymous)?

They don’t call it the “Crackberry” for nothing. :)

    “Crackberry”, nice.

On the subject - check out my comments on “Blackberry Thumb” @ http://www.uncorporate.org

(it’s a slacker’s journey to leadership, so needless to say I’m a huge fan of slacker manager, since someday I’ll be one. )

Funny. Nice work. How did you make it past the adoption police again?
