Good reading for the long weekend

by Bren on July 2nd, 2005

Just a quick pointer to a few worthwhile reads.

First, I’m about the last person to point this out, but ChangeThis has (finally) loaded a few new manifestos. Rosa Say’s ‘Managing With Aloha’ among them. I’ve read and reviewed Rosa’s book, on which this manifesto is based, and it’s good stuff. You should get the book, but if you’re short on time or money, get the manifesto and read the blog.

Next, check out this article about lessons from Hamlet on how not to be a leader. It’s a fun, intelligent read, with little bits of wisdom like, “ Insanity generally isn’t a positive attribute for a leader.” The article isn’t in a blog, so commenting on it is possible, but hard to find. If you’re compelled, go here. (I’m finding it a little ironic that “Quality Digest” makes commenting on their articles so difficult)

Next up, Skip mirrors and comments on Bill Swanson’s (Raytheon’s CEO)25 Unwritten Rules of Management.’ These are great “rules” and Skip’s comments are equally worth reading.

The Wharton Leadership Digest has a nice article about Marcus Buckingham’s perspective on good management. That guy is really getting around these days, but with good reason. He’s got a sound, sane outlook that’s backed up with massive research.

Last, David Allen, of Getting Things Done fame, has a mini rant about casual Friday attire. He’s right on—I love casual Friday, but I don’t love the culture that’s spawned it. How about “casual-whenever-you-can-get-away-with-it-day”? Besides, I’ve really got pretty serious anti-tie issues. I like looking good, but ties really chap my hide. Something about the noose and The Man…
