Slacker Manager

Append to text file v.4

by Bren on July 25th, 2005

Okay, just when I think this can’t go any farther, reader samwyse sends me an AutoHotKey script that appends to a scratch file without using either ActiveWords, or the funky Windows system path thingy. The only requirement to running this is that you’ve got to have AutoHotKey installed (it’s free) on your system. Once that’s done, grab this script and save it somewhere (the C:\scratch directory is a good place). Double click the script to run it (stick it in the startup folder to ensure you never have to remember to double click it again).

Once it’s running, you’ll see an ‘H’ icon in the tray. Now you can use it. Here are the commands in the version that I’m using, but if you open the file in a text editor, you can change them to suit yourself:

Windows key /: opens the text entry box

Windows key j: bypasses the text entry box and dumps whatever is on the clipboard into the scratch file

Windows key k: opens the scratch file in your default text editor

I’m going to have to actually give this a try. I’m a bit of a nut for efficiency, particularly with the way I work. I think it all stems from laziness; I simply refuse to make a task any more difficult than it needs to be.

You should consider building a page on SlackerManager.com that lists your favourite productivity tools and provides links to each. For those who don’t read regularly it would save having to read all the past posts to find the recommended tools.

Good idea, AutoHotKey is something I have used for a long time after stumbling across last year.

On a side note, why not just add a shortcut to the script on your Quick Launch portion of you Takbar?

After talking with you about this yesterday I got it setup first thing this morning. I purposefully did it before listening to vmail or opening email so I could get the habit started right away. So far it’s been really helpful to have one location for all of my to-do stuff, without having to fuss with the Task Manager in Outlook. It’s been superhelpful when I’m in the middle of something and someone comes and asks for help on something else that way I don’t lose my place with what I’m doing, and I don’t forget to talk with them later.

I remember reading a suggestion recently that you should launch a new notepad document every day and keep it running in the background all day for notetaking. I have been using this for a month or so, jotting down thoughts,

The script seems to be inaccessible - the link leads nowhere - any chance of making it accessible again??
