The healing power of donuts
I am fast approaching the end of my FMLA leave–I go back to work on Friday (just in time for the long weekend!). It’s been a fantastic six weeks home with the family, getting to know our new son. As much as I’ve enjoyed being home, I have the distinct feeling that no matter how hard I get worked back at the office, it’s going to feel restful by comparison. I have newfound respect for all the stay-at-home parents of the world.
One thing I have planned for Friday is donuts. Good ones, not the stuff you get from your local supermarket. I’m talking about donuts that begin their short lives in greasy little mom and pop donut shops. My donuts come from The Donut Kettle and they’re awesome. Especially right out of the fryer at 5am. So my plan is to wake up way too early (the last few weeks of baby feedings have conditioned me, so no fear), head down to the Kettle and score a couple dozen of their finest to bring into the office (and a handful for the family, of course).
I’ve been away from the office for a long time and donuts will help everyone remember who I am. Maybe there are one or two people who are a little grumpy at how long I’ve been away. Donuts will ease the pain.
Managers of the world, I beseech you: do not overlook the healing power of donuts. Do your people suspect that you might be a Sith Lord? Sway their opinions with the healing power of donuts. The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but I’m convinced that the other road is covered with donuts.
I believe in the healing power of donuts.

If you are in Portland late some time, you must try Voodoo Donuts. I, too, discovered their healing power upon serving them to co-workers. Best crullers I’ve ever had.
Mmmm…donuts.

We have a guy at work — a senior guy in my company — who occasionally brings donuts into work and leaves them in the kitchen. There’s never any sign that it was him that leaves them (though we know who it was), they just appear, as if from Santa. A genuinely altruistic act, and one which is sincerely appreciated. I hope that all your co-workers enjoy your donuts as much as you obviously will!
I have a secret belief that donuts, in the right hands, could do great things on a global level.

Interesting. I try to bring in donuts about once a month, but I was intrigued by Neal’s comment above. Is it an @$$hole move to announce that you brought the donuts?

I’m all about the donuts, and I bring them in for my team every Friday, free of charge. I have even customized the order over time so that everyone gets exactly what they want. Plus, I get the leftovers for my hungry family.
You are right though, little things like donuts can go a long way. It’s worth the $250 a year for a little sugar-induced good will.

You know I dig on the donut action. People sometimes ask me why I hang a *poster* of donuts in my workspace. Usually, I tell them it’s a not-so-subliminal message to those who want to please/motivate me.
The Donut Kettle is worth the super-early departure. Where else can you get a footlong chocolate with an enormous amount of frosting?

[…] Maybe we can all use some donuts to wrap up our internships. I started to believe the Healing Power of Donuts. People may not remember what projects you did, but they will always remember you are the intern who brought donuts before you left. […]

I heard about a jobseeker who, upon hearing the interview question “is there anything else I should know about you?” answered, “yes, I live near the best bakery in the Cities and I love bringing in treats.” and got the job.
