Friday folder

by Bren on May 4th, 2005

I know it’s only Wednesday, but I figured I’d throw this out there so you’d have plenty of time to implement.

If your office has a dedicated network drive (someplace on the network that isn’t the machine that sits by your desk, is available to the folks in your office, but not the whole company), consider making a "Friday Folder." A Friday Folder is just a directory, or folder, on your network that contains all the weird/funny things that float around on email. Vid clips, image files, Word docs, whatever. Any of that stuff that floats around the office, drop it in the Friday Folder.

Now when you get stuff that you like, you can drop it in the Friday Folder, then send around a link within the office (obviously, this won’t work for folks that don’t have access to your network). We’ve got an all-office listserv that works well for this kinda thing. This serves the dual purpose of keeping down the bandwith taken up by multiple emails bloated bloated with files (a minor concern, but your network folks might thank you), and it also serves as a nice little archive for that stuff, making it easy to find again. And you know you (or someone like you) will always want to find it again.

When you’re having a suck day, you can just troll through the Friday Folder until you’re laughing again.

Couple of caveats that ought to go without saying, but in this day and age of "getting fired for blogging" you can never be too sure. First, please use your God-given common sense when filling up the Friday Folder (translation: anything sent to you from your fraternity brothers is not something you want to put in the Friday Folder). Simple rubric: look at the item you’re going to put in the folder and imagine forwarding it to your boss (or your boss’s boss). Feel ok? Go for it. Feel weird? Just move on, nothing to see here. Second, don’t ask permission to create the Friday Folder. Just make one and start using it–other people will follow suit and pretty soon you’ll have an impressive collection.
