Productivity blog showdown update

Just a quick update on the showdown… We’ll kick it off on Monday morning, with "field leveling" posts from both Steve and Fred in which they’ll provide their own definitions for a bunch of keywords that are often bandied about in productivity conversations.
We’ll continue on Tuesday and Wednesday with Q&A posts, where Fred and Steve each answer identical questions. They may be responding to one another on their own blogs, and when that happens, I’ll provide links so you can participate in those conversations as well.
We’ve collected the questions that have gathered in the earlier post, but feel free to drop in more. I’m guessing that Sunday evening will be the cutoff for Showdown questions, but these guys may want to field others on their own blogs.
I think this’ll be pretty fun!

You know what I’d like to see? A "blog showdown" between Fred Gratzon, of The Lazy Way to Success, and Steve Pavlina, of, well, Steve Pavlina’s blog. Heck, I’d even host the showdown right here on Slacker Manager. Maybe readers could contribute questions, to be answered over the course of three or four days (leave those questions in the comments, just in case these guys agree to it).
I’ve got tremendous respect for both of these guys. I subscribe to both of their blogs and I’ve exchanged email with both of them. I find them to be intelligent, humorous and willing to ask and answer hard questions.
‘Course, with a name like Slacker Manager, you’d be excused for thinking that I had more in common with Fred than with Steve. But the truth is, I see myself as dangling somewhere between the two of them (insert heaven/hell image here). I’ve got strong urges towards Fred’s philosophy, but at the same time, I absolutely agree with much of what Steve writes about.
My guess is that if such a showdown actually took place, there are about three possible outcomes–none bad.
- First possible outcome is that we’d see that the paths Steve and Fred are describing is one path, not two. They may just be describing the same thing with different words.
- The second possible outcome is that they really are describing two distinct paths, but with the same ultimate outcome.
- The third possibility is some combination of the first two. They may be in agreement on one issue, but splitting hairs on another.
The core difference that I see between these two thinkers is where they each stand with respect to the "hard work ethic." Steve says it’s the key to success. Fred says no way. Who’s right? Is hard work an objective necessity to success, or is it something that some folks require but not others? Or is there some other explanation to why two successful entreprenueurs can arrive at such opposing points of view?
