Style and voice

by Bren on November 8th, 2004

I just read a real nice whitepaper written by the fellas over at BusinessLogs.com.  If you’re writing content for the web, I encourage you to read the whitepaper.  It’s pointed at folks who are (or plan to) writing weblogs for their businesses, but really, the ideas they present are worth keeping in mind regardless of your motivation.

The big takeaway for me was the reminder about voice and humor.  I swear, writing that series on ‘The Secret Art of Managing Your Boss‘ felt like writing a paper for grad school.  Probably reads like it too, and for that I apologize.  The fourth installment oughta be a little less stuffy.  I’ll try real hard not to get caught up in pseudo-academic mode from now on.

I learned a great deal about managing my boss from a brief scan of “How to Work for an Idiot.” The single biggest message I got from the book was two-part: 1) The author finally understood how his boss could be such an idiot only after he went to work for himself - and he was still working for an idiot! and 2) His job was to make his boss look more successful at work. This last part isn’t about sucking up or being a sycophant. It was to help the boss succeed at the goals the boss had for the organization.
